Pender County Proclaims Sept. 17 “Hurricane Helpers Day” as Lions Club Honors First Responders

In recognition of the dedication and selfless service of emergency personnel, the Pender County Board of Commissioners proclaimed Sept. 17, 2026, as Hurricane Helpers Day during its Sept. 8 meeting.

Representatives from the Burgaw Lions Club and community partners joined members of the Pender County Sheriff’s Office, Emergency Management and local fire, EMS and law enforcement agencies for the formal presentation of the proclamation.

The initiative connects with the real-life efforts featured in the children’s book Hurricane Helpers, written by Jim Brewster and published by Glad to Do It Publishing. Sponsored by the Burgaw Lions Club, the book tells the story of Pender County Sheriff’s Office personnel who volunteered and deployed to Western North Carolina to assist communities recovering from Hurricane Helene.

The Burgaw Lions Club is selling copies of the book as an ongoing fundraiser to support local disaster preparedness and emergency readiness programs.

On Sept. 17, Lions Club members will travel throughout Pender County to visit the Pender County Sheriff’s Office, local EMS stations and fire stations. Members will deliver sweet treats and personally thank frontline personnel for their continued service.

“When disaster strikes, our first responders step up—not just in our own backyard, but wherever help is needed, just as our Sheriff's Office demonstrated in Western North Carolina after Hurricane Helene,” said Char McClain, Burgaw Lions Club President. “Between the county proclamation on September 8, our station visits on September 17, and the Hurricane Helpers book fundraiser, we are proud to celebrate these heroes and build stronger disaster preparedness for our entire community.”

Community members are encouraged to observe Hurricane Helpers Day by reviewing their family storm plans and supporting local disaster preparedness efforts. Copies of Hurricane Helpers will be available for purchase through the Burgaw Lions Club, with proceeds benefiting local disaster readiness programs.
